Starting on January 7th we are beginning a BRAND NEW sermon series on the book of Ephesians. This book is an inspiring one as it summarizes the Gospel, how the Gospel should impact our lives, and how God uses the Gospel to “recreate” the world we live in.  Each week we’ll examine a section of the book to study and apply to our lives.

I hope to see you either our 7:30am sunrise service or our 10:00am Easter Celebration with brunch in between.  

One change - our 7:30am sunrise service will be indoors.  We felt this wise because of the weather (cold and a bit windy).  I hope everyone understands.  It's still Easter and we are still celebrating!

Did you know we have a podcast? We love seeing everyone at church on Sunday mornings, but between work, families, and general life, it might be hard some weeks to get here. We wanted to provide an additional resource for your spiritual growth outside of our church walls...hence, the growth of "Connected in Community"! Each week, we will be uploading short (20 minute) episodes on topics that we hope you'll find relatable, informative, and encouraging. Good morning Community Church,

Recently I have been reflecting on the idea of thankfulness/being thankful.  Reflecting on thankfulness and/or being thankful for things is a spiritual discipline.  It is something that requires effort and proactivity.  
One of the verses that I have included in my reflection is 1 Thessalonians 5:18 - " . . . give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."  Here, Paul says something profound.  Essentially he says that if we are not thankful in all things that we are not in God's will for our lives.  Wow - that is pretty serious!  We may not always be aware of the totality of God's will for our lives, but we can be sure we are walking in it if we are being thankful  in every aspect of our lives.

Let me encourage you today to take a second and think about something you might be thankful for.  Today is the day to start the new spiritual discipline of thankfulness.  When you do, God's will for you will be largely fulfilled!

Changes . . . let’s be honest - most people don’t like changes.  We like being comfortable; we like routine (I know I do).  Generally, we support the status quo.

The challenge is that the status quo isn’t always the best or most healthy situation for us.  We can get caught in a rut and not really even know what we are missing.  Sometimes, it’s more serious than that.  Spiritually, when we get caught in a rut and support the status quo we fail to be the salt and light that Christ calls us to be in the Gospels.  There is a lot at stake for us as Christians when we don’t embrace change.

Let’s use a different word for change; a more Biblical word - transform(ed)  In Romans 12:2 Paul calls on the Roman Christians to be “transformed by the renewing of your mind.”  Essentially, he’s calling on them to change.  In this case it’s a change for the best - to become more like Christ.  Now to be sure, being transformed can be painful.  It can be hard to look at ourselves and know that we’ve got work do in some areas of our life.  When we realize we are not “all we can be” it can hurt a bit.  That being said, we know that if we change it will be worth it in the end.  The payoff of being like Christ is more than worth it!

As we approach the fall there is going to be a lot of changes here at Community Church.  Remember, with change comes short-term discomfort, but long-term gain.  Please allow yourselves to be stretched and remember that God calls us to be transformed daily.  It’ll be worth it in the end!

There are a lot of exciting things happing in our church!  One of the exciting things is the arrival of our Director of Family Ministries and the beginnings of this new ministry.  I hope you are excited about what God is going to do through Nicole and our church in general as we create a new generation of disciples.

Of course, with new opportunities come changes that have to be made.  To talk about some of these changes here at the church we are having another CONVERSATION!  Much like our conversation last November, we want to share how things might look going forward and how we will all need to adjust to maximize the effort and resources that we are expending.

We want to share, but we want to hear from you as well.  If you have questions, concerns, or ideas please share them on Sunday.  We can't guarantee we will take up every idea, but we can promise that everyone's opinion will be valued and heard.

The CONVERSATION will be held this Sunday (May 22nd) immediately following the service.  We'll have a handout for everyone with some talking points.

Please make an effort to be at the CONVERSATION so we as a church are all on the same page.

What is God Doing?

Most of us shuffle through life.  Putting one foot in front of the other, we do our day to day stuff the best we can.  Things are OK - not too bad, but not too good - just OK.  Hey, what's wrong with that?

There is something more . . .

I've made the argument (and will continue to make it) that in the Bible we are encouraged to see our encounter with Christ as life-changing.  Specifically,  the mundane stuff of life, becomes not mundane, but meaningful.  You might even say, after our encounter with Christ - "everything is spiritual."

So if everything takes on spiritual meaning, this means that we can see God in everything.  We can see God's salvific work all  around us . . . if we just look closely enough.  So your trip to McDonalds - yes, God's there and working.  Your trip to Publix - yes, God's there and working.  Even a trip to physical therapy (like I had today) - yes, God is there and working!

So let me encourage you today to ask a simple question - "what is God doing?"  When you start asking, you'll start noticing!

Last month in our newsletter we talked about personal spiritual growth.  If you’re not growing, you're not healthy!  This also applies to the church.  The question is - how does the church grow.  Well I would suggest this thought - there is qualitative growth and quantitative growth.  Qualitative growth is spiritual growth and quantitative growth is numerical growth.  I believe our church is beginning to excel at spiritual growth, be we are lacking numerical growth.  I think the fair question is how do we achieve spiritual growth.  To put it another way, how do we reach people and incorporate them into the church?

To be honest, it’s really not hard!  All that is necessary is a heart and excitement for Christ and the church.  When we have excitement we naturally will share and invite people to church.  All we need to do is share and invite - that’s it.  We discussed that on Good Friday (if you missed this teaching download our app and watch the video - app.srbcc.com).  

So I challenge you this month to identify ONE PERSON to invite to church.  You are key to our growth - don’t let us down!

The "Now" and the "Not Yet"

Easter Sunday was wonderful.  The spirit in the room was great!  Thanks for making it special!

During the service I shared a quote with you.  Here it is again - “Jesus' resurrection is the beginning of God's new project, not to snatch people away from earth but to colonize earth with the life of heaven." (N.T. Wright, Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church)

The quote make the argument that the cross of Christ and salvation through this sacrifice isn't merely about getting into heaven through salvation.  This is the "not yet."  We are sealed by the Spirit and are guaranteed to be be with the God.  Though it must be acknowledged, this has yet to come to fruition.  "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known." (1 Corinthians 13:12).

This leaves us with the "now."  The cross also introduces a new reality for the world.  It is being redeemed and we as Christians need to bring the truth of that salvation to bear in the world.  I believe this is was Christ means in the Lord's Prayer - " . . . they will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."  God has saved and that is the reality of heaven. There is grace and unity in heaven.  There is true worship in heaven.  We are to bring this to the world "now."  

So we make a mistake when we only focus on the "not yet."  We need to focus on the "now."  We must accept the challenge and opportunity to bring heaven to earth!"

Numerous people in the church have asked about supporting a ministry in Ukraine or one that is working in the Ukraine.  While there are many out there, I’d like to suggest that we focus in on one vetted and proven ministry for us to support and inform our church members about.  Several of our church members have experience with one organization that is on the ground in Ukraine and doing good work - https://liferomania.org.  This is a ministry based in Romania that is providing food, resources, and ministry help to those in Ukraine, particularly the youth of Ukraine.

If you feel led, please give what you can to this really great ministry.  I know many have already!
